New MOT rules on number plates are likely to catch many motorists.

In a few weeks time the MOT rules are catching aimed at catching drivers who try to evade speed camera detection by using reflective paint or alter the car number plate's background to make it impossible for the camera to discern,read and record the number.
The Department for Transport estimates that there are currently 40,000 motorists who will be caught by this new rule.
"The main purpose of this modification to the MOT test is to detect registration-plates which have an illegal background that can prevent identification of the plate by traffic enforcement cameras."
Other forms of tampering with number plates are already illegal, such as using a bolt or masking tape to change the appearance of a letter.
